What is prompt tracking?
Prompt tracking is the practice of monitoring a defined set of prompts, the questions customers might ask an AI assistant, and recording how a brand appears in the responses over time: whether it is mentioned, recommended or cited, and alongside whom. It is the AI-answer equivalent of keyword tracking: the value is in the trend across a consistent prompt set, not any single response, which can vary between runs.
How it works
Define the prompt set: the questions your customers would plausibly ask an assistant: recommendations, comparisons, “best X for Y” and how-to queries in your field.
Run them on a schedule: the same prompts, across the assistants that matter, at regular intervals.
Record the answers: whether your brand is mentioned, recommended or cited; in what context; and which competitors appear.
Read the trend: single responses vary between runs, so the signal is movement across the set over time.
Prompt tracking vs keyword tracking
The two are parallel instruments for parallel channels. Keyword tracking records positions in ranked results, an ordered list with a number against your site. Prompt tracking monitors synthesised answers, where there is no position: a brand is present or absent, recommended or ignored, and responses vary between runs by design. That variability is why prompt tracking leans harder on consistent prompts and trend-reading than rank tracking ever needed to.
