What is AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is a comparative measure of how often a brand is mentioned, recommended or cited in relevant AI-generated answers, relative to competitors across the same monitored set of prompts. It applies the long-standing share-of-voice idea to AI responses: not just “are we visible?” but “how much of the visibility that matters is ours, and who is taking the rest?”.

How it works

The measure starts from a monitored prompt set, the questions that matter in your category, run on a schedule across chosen assistants. Each brand’s appearances are counted, and your share is your slice of the total: of forty relevant answers this month, how many named you, and how many named each competitor. Methodologies vary, mentions may be weighted differently from recommendations or citations, so the figure is meaningful within one consistent method, tracked over time.

Why it matters

Presence alone flatters: being named in three answers sounds fine until you learn a competitor was named in thirty. Share converts AI visibility from anecdote into competitive position, who owns the answers in your category, whether your slice is growing, and which competitor is taking the space. It is the same logic that made classic share of voice more useful than raw mention counts, applied to a new surface.
