AI Search
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is the extent to which a business is mentioned, cited or recommended by AI systems, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews, when people ask questions those systems answer. As more buying research happens inside AI assistants, it is becoming a measurable channel alongside traditional search rankings.
Why it matters
A growing share of buying research now ends inside an AI answer rather than on a results page. When an assistant recommends three suppliers and you are not one of them, there is no page two to be found on. For smaller businesses there is also a genuine opportunity: assistants often draw on clear, specific, factual content rather than brand size alone, so a business that publishes genuinely useful material can be surfaced alongside much larger competitors.
How it works
AI assistants build answers from two places: what their models learned in training, and what they retrieve live from the web while answering. A business can influence both in the same way, by publishing clear, well-structured, factual content that is easy to extract, and by being mentioned consistently across the sources assistants draw on. Neither is guaranteed: the assistant decides what to retrieve and what to cite.
Measuring it means asking the questions your customers would ask, “best [service] in [city]”, “[product] vs [alternative]”, across assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews, and recording who gets named, cited or recommended, and how that changes over time.
AI visibility vs SEO
SEO measures where your pages rank in a list of results. AI visibility measures whether your brand appears inside the synthesised answer itself. They are related, retrieval often draws on the same indexed, well-structured content that performs in search, but they diverge: an assistant can recommend a brand without linking to it, and a page-one ranking does not guarantee a mention. Treat them as two readings of the same underlying asset: useful, extractable content.
A practical example
An independent mortgage broker asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews the questions its clients ask, “do I need a broker for a first mortgage?”, “best mortgage broker for self-employed”, and records which firms are named. It is absent from all three. If it then publishes specific, factual guides answering exactly those questions, later checks can show whether its guides start being cited: a kind of visibility no ranking report would surface.
Common questions
Can AI visibility be directly controlled?
No; there is no submission form or paid placement. It is influenced, gradually, by the clarity, specificity and consistency of what is published about you, on your site and beyond it.
How is it measured in practice?
By running a consistent set of representative questions through the major assistants on a schedule, and recording mentions, citations and recommendations against competitors. As with rank tracking, the value is in the trend, not any single answer.
