AI Search
What is an AI citation?
An AI citation is an explicit reference or link to a source within an AI-generated answer, for example, a linked domain beneath a ChatGPT answer or a source shown in a Google AI Overview. A citation is stronger evidence than a mention: it shows the system retrieved and used specific content. Citations cannot be bought or submitted; they follow from publishing material AI systems find worth drawing on.
Citation vs mention
A mention is your brand named in an answer’s text; a citation is your content explicitly referenced or linked as a source. The distinction matters for evidence and for traffic. A mention shows the systems associate your brand with the topic, valuable, but hard to trace. A citation shows specific content was retrieved and used, and gives the reader a path to your site. Both count towards visibility; citations are the stronger, more actionable signal.
What makes content citable
Citations cannot be bought, submitted or marked up into existence. Retrieval systems favour what is easy to verify and lift: pages that answer a specific question directly, state facts plainly enough to quote, come from a source whose identity is consistent across the web, and are reachable by crawlers. In practice, the content that earns featured snippets and ranks for question queries is the same content that tends to accumulate citations.
