What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the emerging practice of improving the likelihood that a brand and its content are understood, retrieved and referenced by generative AI systems when they answer relevant questions. It overlaps heavily with good SEO and content practice, clear, factual, well-structured, extractable content, but its target is the synthesised answer rather than the ranked list. The terminology is still settling, and GEO is often discussed alongside AEO.
How GEO relates to SEO
Most of GEO is good SEO carried one step further. Both depend on content being crawlable, factual, well-structured and genuinely useful; retrieval systems draw heavily on the same indexed web that rankings do. The divergence is the target: SEO optimises for a position in a list, GEO for being understood and drawn on within a synthesised answer, which raises the premium on extractable structure, clear standalone facts, consistent entity information and being referenced by other credible sources.
What GEO work looks like in practice
Answer-shaped content: question-led sections with concise, self-contained answers
Facts machines can lift cleanly: definitions, figures and claims stated plainly, with sources
Consistent identity: the business described the same way across its site and the wider web
Earned mentions: presence in the third-party sources AI systems retrieve from
Honesty matters here: nothing in GEO guarantees inclusion in any answer. These practices raise the odds; the systems decide.
