Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

SEO & Search

What is search engine optimisation (SEO)?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the practice of improving a website and its content so it appears more prominently in unpaid search results. It spans three broad areas: content that genuinely answers what people search for, technical foundations that let search engines crawl and index the site, and the authority signals, such as links from other reputable sites, that suggest the content can be trusted.

The three areas of SEO

  • Content: pages that genuinely answer what people search for, matched to search intent, specific enough to beat the coverage already ranking.

  • Technical health: a site search engines can crawl and index: sound structure, working pages, reasonable speed, no accidental blocks on indexing.

  • Authority: signals that the site can be trusted, above all backlinks from relevant, reputable sites.

Most small-business SEO effort belongs in the first area. Technical problems are usually fixed once; authority accrues slowly as a consequence of publishing things worth referencing; content is the part you control week to week.

Why it matters

Search is where demand already exists: people typing exactly what they need, at the moment they need it. Visibility there compounds, a page that earns its position keeps receiving visitors without further spend, which is why organic search tends to become the cheapest acquisition channel a business has, even though it is rarely the fastest.

Common questions

How long does SEO take?

There is no universal timeline, despite the confident figures often quoted. It depends on the site’s existing authority, the competitiveness of the terms, technical health and content quality. Some pages gain traction quickly; competitive terms can take much longer. Judge progress by trend, tracked positions and growing organic traffic, rather than a promised month.

Is SEO still worth it as AI answers grow?

The habit of asking questions is not going anywhere; where the answers appear is shifting. The same qualities that earn rankings, clear, specific, genuinely useful content, are also what AI systems tend to retrieve and cite, so the work transfers rather than expires.
