Content Creation
What is brand voice?
Brand voice is the distinctive, consistent way a business sounds in everything it writes, its vocabulary, tone, rhythm and point of view. A defined voice makes content recognisable and coherent across articles, social posts and web pages, whoever or whatever produced it. Without one, content drifts towards a generic register that could belong to anyone.
Why it matters
Voice is how content stays recognisably yours as volume grows. When one person writes everything, consistency happens by accident; the moment content comes from several people, or from AI, it drifts towards the neutral corporate average unless the voice is defined. A clear voice also compounds trust: readers who recognise how you sound start to feel they know you before they ever get in touch.
How a voice is defined
The practical method is descriptive, not aspirational: study what the business already sounds like at its best, the founder’s emails, the pages that feel right, and name the patterns. Typical dimensions include vocabulary (plain or technical), rhythm (short and punchy or measured), stance (opinionated or balanced) and the phrases that are distinctly yours, alongside a list of what you would never say. AI writing systems can learn a voice the same way, from the writing a business has already published.
A practical example
Two firms of surveyors offer identical services. One writes “our RICS-accredited professionals deliver comprehensive assessments”; the other writes “we tell you what is actually wrong with the building, in plain English, before you buy it”. Same service, different voice, and a prospect can only remember one of them.
