Search Volume

SEO & Search

What is search volume?

Search volume is an estimate of how many times a term is searched within a given period and location, usually expressed monthly. The figures come from tools and datasets, not directly from search engines, so they vary between sources and should be read as indicative demand rather than a precise count. Volume is one input for prioritising keywords, alongside intent, relevance and difficulty.

How to read volume figures

Volume estimates come from tools that model demand from sampled data; they are not live counts from search engines, and different tools regularly disagree about the same term. Treat the figures as ordering information: “this term is searched far more than that one” is dependable; “this term gets exactly 720 searches a month” is not. Low-volume terms can still be valuable when the intent is strongly commercial, and a group of related low-volume questions often outweighs one contested head term.

Why it matters

Volume protects effort in both directions: it stops content being written for searches nobody makes, and it flags where demand justifies deeper coverage. But volume alone is a poor master, chasing big numbers leads straight to the most competitive terms, which is why it is weighed alongside search intent and keyword difficulty rather than read on its own.
