What is conversion rate?
Conversion rate is the percentage of people who take a desired action, submitting an enquiry, subscribing, booking, buying, out of those who had the opportunity. What counts as a conversion depends entirely on the page’s job, and rates vary widely by industry, traffic source and offer, so published benchmark figures rarely transfer. The useful comparison is your own rate, on the same measurement, over time.
Why benchmarks rarely transfer
Published “average conversion rates” blend industries, traffic sources, price points and definitions of conversion into a single misleading figure. A rate that would be poor for a newsletter sign-up may be excellent for a five-figure service enquiry; visitors from a comparison search convert differently from social browsers. The usable comparison is internal: the same page, the same conversion definition, the same traffic mix, tracked over time, especially before and after changes.
Improving conversion honestly
Conversion problems are usually clarity problems: visitors who cannot tell what is offered, for whom, at what rough cost, or what happens next. The reliable improvements are unglamorous, a clearer promise, evidence of real work, a call to action proportionate to the visitor’s stage, less friction in the form. Tactical tricks move decimals; clarity moves rates.
